2025 Quail Project.
Backstory: in 2023 I acquired 12 fertilized quail eggs from a lady north of Edmonton. 7 hatched and started my adventures. Once we divided the males and females I realized most were male, which wasn't going to work for what I had planned, so I went to a local Facebook group to find chicks, which I did but sadly I learned that not everyone is a good person and ended up loosing 3 out of the 5 to illness. Thankfully the two that did make it were females.
Fast forward to the fall of 2024, I ordered some fertilized eggs from a farm in Manitoba. These were Jumbo Quail, which is something I've been interested in. I had high hopes but sadly out of 12, 1 hatched. Thankfully the lone chick survived and grew into a handsome male who I named Dugal.
Sweet Dugal and the 5 ladies with him in the video are the breeding selection for this year. I am very excited to see what the color combinations look like. I'm hoping most if not all will have some of his beautiful grey colouring.
This year I'm hatching out the biggest number of eggs to date. 27 in total. Weighed and numbered so I could keep track of how many hatches and the different information collected during the incubation process. They were started last night (14.02.2025). Hatching in 18 days from that date. 3 Candlings: One 3 days after entering the incubator. One at 10 days. The final candling happens when I get them ready for lockdown.
Stay tuned, in a couple weeks ill be posting an update with total hatched and photos of the cute babies.
